Is Auburn, WA the Worst City in America to Own a Pit Bull?

Pit Bull Haters — Is Auburn, WA the worst city in America to own a Pit Bull? Three recent events involving Pit Bulls makes me think so. A few days ago a Pit Bull puppy was stabbed to death in a dog park, a couple weeks before that a man stabbed and attempted to beat to death a Pit Bull with a large rock, and finally an Auburn policeman in March of this year shot to death a Pit Bull on a families’ porch.

It is not surprising that Auburn for many years had breed specific legislation declaring Pit Bulls as well as several other breeds “dangerous dogs” just for being born. It did not matter what the disposition of the individual dog, if it was on the list, then it was dangerous.  The Auburn city ordinance read:

Lala was shot twice in the head by Auburn, WA police on the family's porch.

Lala was shot twice in the head by Auburn, WA police on the family’s porch.

“Potentially dangerous dog” also means any dog that is known by the owner or should reasonably be known by the owner to be an Akita, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Can Corso, Dogo Argentino, Dogue d Bordeaux, Kuzasz, Pit Bull Terrier, Presa Canario, Staffordshire Bull Terrier or Tosa Inu, or breed of dog, or any mix of dog breeds which contains as an element of its breeding the breed of Akita, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Can Corso, Dogo Argentino, Dogue d Bordeaux, Kuzasz, Pit Bull Terrier, Presa Canario, Staffordshire Bull Terrier or Tosa Inu, as to be identifiably of or partially of such breed(s), or dogs that have an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to dogs referred to above.

Fortunately Auburn, Washington has updated their city ordinances to no longer list out dangerous dogs by dog breed but obviously from the three incidences described in this article the biased perception of Pit Bulls in Auburn have not changed.

For the truth about Pit Bulls, I believe the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has done an excellent job dispelling commonly held Pit Bull myths and articulating the facts on their website.

If you think you know of a city in America that hates Pit Bulls more that Auburn, WA please let me know. I am going to compile a list of the worst cities in America to own a Pit Bull.
